In this excerpt we can see that Lip-Lip had fought many puppy fights and his teeth scored on the newcomer every time a new puppy arrived. He did this to prove his dominance to the other dogs, however, when White Fang arrived he had his fight with Lip- Lip but the excerpt tells us that it was only the first of many fights since their natures were destined to clash.

Therefore, we can tell that through this conflict, that both Lip-lip and White Fang had the need to be the dominant one.
