Which historical figure played a major role in the abolition of slavery in British empire ?
denis-greek [22]

The correct answer is: A) William Wilberforce.

Explanation:

William Wilberforce (1759 - 1833) was an English politician who is remembered as one of the leaders of the anti-slavery movement.

He was converted to Christianism, and had as spiritual leader a former slave trader John Newton, this was one of the main reasons he became defendant of the slaves. He fought in the House of Commons for the abolition of slavery, but his first bill to abolish slave trade was defeated instantly by 163 votes to 88. It was until 1807 when Wilberforce achieved success and his bill to abolish slave trade was passed by 283 to 16.

In 1823 Anti Slavery Society was formed and William Wilberforce joined the movement, but he was already retired so he didn't played an important part in this movement.
