W. E. B. DuBois was an African American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, author, writer and editor. He was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as well as a proponent of Pan-Africanism. He strongly protested against lynching and Jim Crow laws. He was a prolific author and editor of the NAACP's journal <em>The Crisis</em>.

Langston Hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist and columnist. He was an innovator in jazz poetry and is known as the leader of the Harlem Renaissance.
