The characters experience in monkeys paw is initially that of bewilderment and wonder, as they see the granting of their wishes as positive despite the warnings and stories attached to it. These feelings eventually take a turn toward apprehension and fear as their wishes are granted at terrible costs to them, such as a son being killed to grant them money. What starts as a wonderful thing becomes a curse upon them, fulfilling their desires in macabre and twisted ways.
