pretend that he is not guilty because he is not good at pretending. It was
actually his wife who helps him kill the threats to the throne; and his guilt
overtakes his composure and he is exposed by his own reaction and actions.
I believe he is drawing a parallel between a tone of pure joy and the most depressing despair.
