The first half of this line is a metaphor. It compares the beginning of spring and new life to the color gold. Gold is also symbolic of something that is good or valuable.

This half of the line is personification. Personification is giving nonhuman things humanlike traits. In this line it gives Nature, a nonhuman, the ability to hold, which is a human trait.
These lines are describing when things begin in Nature. Most often this occurs in Spring. The flowers begin to shoot up from the ground, and new animal babies are born. This is the time where everything is golden. Things are new, exciting, and innocent. Unfortunately, this doesn't last, which is why it's hard to hold. Things grow up and change. They gain more knowledge and lose their innocence they once had.

The world in "A Jury of Her Peers" is totally dominated by men. Women were restricted in their own abilities and expected to exist in the shadows of their husbands. The responsibilities of caring for a house, and a kitchen in particular were for women and their opinion did not count in matters.
At the latter end of the story, the women were later united by Minnie's predicament and stood up against the shared oppression they had all faced.
Loneliness
Minnie Wright was an extremely vibrant woman before her marriage to John Wright, and then she started living a solitaire life. Her friends do not visit her, neither is she allowed to use the telephone. She is also without children. She finally loses all hope left, when her husband brutally kills the bird that provide her comfort.
