It depends on your point of view. The printing press gave literacy to many more people and allowed the printing and wide circulation of many types of material, from religious. It exposed people to new ideas and encouraged criticism of the establishment. The Church and most governments would not have liked this because they were trying to control people's thoughts and actions.
