By 1900 the middle class had grown considerably. The word mass refers to a large
quantity or amount. Members of the growing middle class began to have some leisure time and looked for
ways to amuse themselves, which led to mass entertainment such as movies, amusement parks, travel,
and spectator sports. Factories began mass production of goods. Department stores were built and mass
merchandising through catalogs became very popular. People began communicating with instruments of
mass communication such as telephones and telegraph.
