Answer:

The answer is letter C. While the first passage has a dark, horrifying tone, the tone of the second is much lighter.

Explanation:

The first passage talks of death striking several people, adults and children. It mentions new kinds of illnesses and people dying just a few hours after the symptoms appear. It is quite a horrifying account, making the passage dark, scary.

On the other hand, the second passage conveys its message in a much lighter way. The author is defending the idea that using Sequoia trees to make lumber is as much a waste as it would be to kill and cook George Washington. The trees and Washington have much more to offer than such ridiculous purposes. That comparison, as well as the description of the Sequoia tree coming to town to defend its own cause, are humorous, making the passage light.

Read this excerpt from Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun in which Ruth and Mama discuss Walter's refusal to take Lindner'
meriva

Answer: B. By having Ruth feel pride toward Walter after her initial indifference, the author leaves the reader feeling satisfied with their relationship.

Walter has been a complicated character throughout the play. Unhappy with his financial situation, he is desperate to improve it, at the same time as he is ashamed because of his inability to provide for his family. This leads him to make bad financial decisions that only leave the family in a worse situation. This has also taken a toll on his relationship with Ruth. However, in this scene, we see Walter has changed, and Ruth has noticed. She is extremely proud of him, which implies that their relationship will survive.
