Dan drove 9 miles south and 12 miles east. What is the shortest distance to his starting point?

Working out the hypotenuse
a^2+b^2=c^2
9^2+12^2=c^2
81+144=225

square root of 225 = 15
therefore 15 miles is the shortest distance
