Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" revolves around the Igbo people's transition that was disrupted on with the coming of the Britishers. The Igbo community of which Okwonkwo and his family are a part of, is the central scene of this story.

Okwonkwo and his people had been a community based traditional oriented people, happy and contented with their own lives. But with the offer of a 'supposedly' superior life through the Britisher's 'good news', the usual community oriented life of the Igbo people began to be shaken. The missionary works done by the British people led some to be influenced by the new hope of living a different and better life while some of them still oppose the new norms greatly. This began the theme of tradition versus change, tradition represented by the Igbo community and change by the Britishers. This theme is best illustrated by the sentence
