Bernice cuts Marjorie's braids in the short story "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" just before she sneaks out of town the night before an important party held in her and Majorie's honor. Marjorie tricks Bernice into cutting her hair into a bob because she is jealous that Wayne shifted his attention from Marjorie to Bernice. In the story, a girl with a bob is scandalous and is only seen on "liberated" women. Bernice throws the cut braids onto Wayne's front porch on her way out of town.
