The major theatres of the Russo-Japanese War were:

• Port Arthur;
• Liaodong Peninsula;
• Mukden;
• Yellow sea;
• Tsushima Straits;
• along the railway line from Port Arthur to Harbin.

The Russians were constantly looking for a warm water port in the Pacific Ocean, not just for maritime trade but also for their navy. They had already established the Pacific seaport of Vladivostok, it was the only active Russian port. But it was only operational during the summer season. Port Arthur, on the other hand, would give them the chance to be operational all year. Negotiations didn't work between the Tsar's government and Japan, so the Japanese chose to go to war to maintain exclusive control over Korea and Manchuria.

Although the Japanese won multiple battles, Tsar Nicholas II believed Russia would win the war. He chose to remain engaged in the war, but the Japanese continued to defeat the Russians. The war concluded when both countries signed the Treaty of Portsmouth, mediated by Theodore Roosevelt, president of the US. Needless to say, Japan won the war.
