America is a Christian built country under the hand and rule of "God." In the Biblical Ten Commandments it states you must accept Jesus Christ as your savior or you will go to Hell (unless you repent before death). Now Americans at one time really did believe this, so when Immigrants started coming from Asia, Europe, Etc.(even some Catholics) their beliefs were against the standard American beliefs. This was seen in the workforce for example where Christian men wouldn't hire immigrants because of color and religion.
