Founded in 1836 by Dr. Marcus Whitman<span> and his wife, Narcissa, the </span>Whitman Mission<span> was the site of one of the worst tragedies along the Oregon Trail. The Whitmans, Methodist missionaries, offered religious instruction and medical services to the local Cayuse Indians.</span>
Women might work as clerks, teachers, and nurses, for example. As the nature of industries changed, new types of work evolved. Many women found work in the newly growing light industries, such as the production of electrical goods. The gender Disqualification Act of 1919 made it simpler for women to enroll in colleges and seek employment.
Over 50,000 women across the country marched for peace and against above ground testing of nuclear weapons. By the mid 1960s the focus of the organization shifted to working against the Vietnam war.

century, European countries were expanding their empire. This lead to the
colonization of Asia and Africa. Racism has been rampant at that time.
