Lastly, when two environments are isotonic, the total molar concentration of dissolved solutes is the same in both of them.

Therefore; when fish from sea water are placed in a fresh water environment, they will absorb water osmotically and burst. This is explained by the fact that they become hypertonic to the fresh water thus their cells take in more water, which makes them burst.
