Bantu people are all those hundred indigenous ethnic groups in sub-Saharan Africa who spread over a wide area from Central Africa across the African Great Lakes to Southern Africa. The larger of the individual Bantu groups have populations of several million.

Bantu peoples are made up of the approximately 85 million speakers of the more than 500 distinct languages of the Bantu subgroup of the Niger-Congo language family.
