Then, expansions ceased and after the 3rd Century Crisis, barbarians invaded the Roman Empire and they received parts of land in the western part of the empire in exchange of their help to combat another barbarians. In 395, the Roman Empire was definitely divided into two territories and by 470, the Western Roman Empire was limited to the territories in the Italian peninsula.
