In opposition to this, demonstrators rallying the 54-mile route from Selma to the state capital of Montgomery (on March of year 1965)  were challenged with lethal violence from state officials and white segregationist called the Selma to Montgomery March. This brought the racial segregation and discriminatory practices against the African Americans in contrast to their white counterparts, in the region.
