Answer:

C. He was spirited away by supernatural means.

Explanation:

Washington Irving's short story "The Leged of Sleepy Hollow" tells the supernatural story of how a schoolmaster of a small town was taken away/ disappeared one night, never to be found. This 'fairytale' story of the disappearance of Ichabod Crane has left many of the womenfolk in the town to agree that he had indeed been taken away by some spirit.

Ichabod Crane, a schoolmaster, was in conflict with Brom Bones for the hand of the beautiful Katrina Van Tassel. But in his belief of the imaginary and the supernatural, he was 'warded; off by the prankster enemy Brom, who seemed to have a hand in the 'disappearance' of the school master. For whenever any mention of the case of Ichabod was made, he'd smile knowingly and even smiled when the "<em>smashed pumpkin</em>" was mentioned. In the end, he got to marry Katrina as his competition Crane was nowhere to be seen. But the old country wives still maintain that Crane was whisked away by the Headless Horseman, thus accepting the idea of Crane being spirited away by supernatural means.
