There is a difference between the speaker of “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” and the speaker of “Some Keep the Sabbath Going to Church”. The different is, the speaker in the former knows exactly what her goal is, while the speaker in the latter believes that she has already achieved it.

EXPLANATION

“Because I Could Not Stop for Death” is a poem from Emily Dickinson. In this poem, the speaker is communicating from the beyond of the grave. The speaker is describing her journey and experience with “death.” The “death” in this poem is personified, from life to the afterlife of the speaker. In the first stanza, the speaker thinks that “death” is kind enough because “death” gives more time for her to do what she cannot or hasn’t done. Thus, “death” stops for a while to give her more time. The speaker of this poem doesn’t see death as frightening or intimidating, rather, she sees death as a gentle guide to lead her to eternity.

On the other hand, “Some Keep the Sabbath Going to Church” is a poem from Emily Dickinson about the attitude toward traditional Christian beliefs and faith. These beliefs take into new scientific foundings. In this poem, the speaker believes that she has already done and achieved her goal, although the speaker knows that she doesn’t follow what society and people expect her.

In the first poem, there is a goal that the speaker wants to achieve yet cannot, but is going towards it with the help of personified Death. In the second one, the speaker believes that she has already reached the goal and therefore everything's good.
