Situational irony is focused on the events being the opposite of what is expected. Dramatic irony occurs when the audience knows something the characters do not. An example of this is when Romeo is hiding under Juliet's balcony listening to her profess her love. Juliet does not know that he is there, but the audience does. Verbal irony is when a character says the opposite of what he or she really means. This can also be called sarcasm in most instances.
