Copernicus established that planets orbited around the sun instead of otherwise; Galileo improved the telescope; Kepler constructed the mathematics necessary to explain the motion of the planets around the sun; Newton discovered gravity, which also helped explaining the movement of the planets around the sun.

The second is called merit selection in which the judges are chosen by a legislative committee based off of the judges past records.
