Which parts of this excerpt from John Bunyan's The Pilgrim’s Progress show that the central character is devoutly religious and

God-fearing?
Then said Evangelist, Why not willing to die, since this life is attended with so many evils?  The man answered, Because I fear that this burden is upon my back will sink me lower than the grave, and I shall fall into Tophet  [Isa. 30:33] And, Sir, if I be not fit to go to prison, I am not fit, I am sure, to go to judgement, and from thence to execution; and the thoughts of these things make me cry

Then said Evangelist, If this be thy condition, why standest thou still? He answered, Because I know not whither to go. Then he gave him a parchment roll, and there was written within, Flee from the wrath to come. [Matt. 3.7]

The man therefore read it, and looking upon Evangelist very carefully, said, Whither must I fly? Then said Evangelist, pointing with his finger over a very wide field, Do you see yonder wicket-gate? [Matt. 7:13,14] The man said, No. Then said the other, Do you see yonder shining light? [Ps. 119:105; 2 Pet. 1:19] He said, I think I do. Then said Evangelist, Keep that light in your eye, and go up directly thereto: so shalt thou see the gate; at which, when thou knockest, it shall be told thee what thou shalt do.

<span>"The man therefore read it, and looking upon Evangelist very carefully, said, Whither must I fly?" This shows that the central character is willing to go the path that Evangelist advises him to, it's something that he feels he wants and must do.</span>
<span>
"Then said Evangelist, 'Keep that light in your eye, and go up directly thereto:<span> so shalt thou see the gate; at which, when thou knockest, it shall be told thee what thou shalt do.'" This shows that the central character is willing to follow Evangelist's instruction because of both the character's name and where he is saying he should head.

I think this is the answer, it's along the lines of what I would put. Hope it helps!

The <em>religious devotion and fear of God</em> of the character ofThe Pilgrim's Progress are expressed in the parts: <em>"...I fear that this burden upon my back</em> <em>will sink me lower than the grave..."</em> (meaning not only physical death). And when he answers the Evangelist that he sees "<em>the yonder shinning light"</em>, where he can receive instructions to find the truth, (<em>heaven, the Kingdom of</em> <em>God</em>), which is the purpose of his pilgrimage.

Directions: Read the following passage. Then decide whether the student sample at the right (or below) cites the passage accepta
lana [24]

Answer:

b) Unacceptable

Explanation:

This is an <u>unacceptable</u> form of citation, as it closely resembles the original text. Regardless of identifying the author and including the page number, the student still committed an act of plagiarism.

The purpose of <u>paraphrasing</u> text is to communicate the author's ideas or main points using your own words. This is an alternative way of referencing the concepts or literary work of other authors without using direct quotation. In academic writing, students are strongly urged to cite their source of information.  If it is too challenging to paraphrase a text, then it is best to directly quote your original source as an in-text citation.  It is also important to include the author's last name and the page number of the text (if using the MLA formatting style).

Which best describes the type of appeal used in this part of speech
Charra [1.4K]

Answer:

I believe the complete question and excerpt are:

Read the excerpt from Franklin Roosevelt's request for a declaration of war.

"It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. "

Which best describes the type of appeal used in this part of the speech?

The answer is:

A logical appeal

Explanation:

Rhetorical strategies are literary devices involving phrases or words that a writer or speaker uses to persuade the audience. Rhetorical appeals are of four forms:

  1. Pathos is the appeal to emotion. This aims to incite an emotional response (empathy, sympathy, fear, anger, love etc.) in the audience
  2. Ethos is the appeal to credibility, character or authority of the speaker. This forces the audience to think that the writer, speaker must be right because he/she is experienced, competent or of sound character.
  3. Logos is the appeal to logic and reason. This involves the use of arguments, premises and evidence to persuade the audience.
  4. Kairos is the appeal to urgency, circumstance or context. It involves persuasion based on the timeliness or context i.e. in light of current or near future issues.

In the current case, Franklin Roosevelt develops an argument and presents his premises on the Pearl Harbor attack and how long the Japanese Empire had been planning it.
