In a story, the "setting" includes the general landscape or place in which events take place. This element is usually presented through detailed descriptions that help the reader visualize the setting. This is the case of the excerpt from "To Build a Fire" by Jack London because in this, details such as "nor hint of sun", "intangible pall over the face of things" or "a subtle gloom that made the day dark" allow the reader to imagine the sky was grey because there was not any sun on it. Thus, based on the previous words about the setting the reader can visualize "the gray, sunless sky".
