Another option is to think of a thesis statement as one complete sentence that expresses your position.

Narrows the topic down to a specific focus of an investigation.

Establishes a direction for the entire paper.

Points forward to the conclusion.

Always stated in your introduction. (Usually at the end of the first paragraph).

Always take a stand and justify further discussion.

A thesis statement is not a statement of fact.

Your readers—especially your instructors—want to read writing that engages them. Consequently, you must write thesis statements that are arguable, not factual. Statements of fact seem easy to write about because, well, they are easy to prove. After all, they’re facts. The problem is that you cannot write engaging papers around statements of fact. Such theses prevent you from demonstrating critical thinking and analytical skills, which you want to show your instructor. If you were to write a paper around the next two statements, your writing would probably be quite dull because you would be restating facts that the general public already knows.

Thesis Statements always take a stand and justify further discussion.

In order to make your writing interesting, you should develop a thesis statement that is arguable. Sometimes you will be writing to persuade others to see things your way and other times you will simply be giving your strong opinion and laying out your case for it.

Take a look at the following examples:

Statement of fact:

Small cars get better fuel mileage than 4x4 pickup trucks.

Arguable thesis statement:

The government should ban 4x4 pickup trucks except for work-related use.

Statement of fact:

Foul language is common in movies.

Arguable thesis statement:

The amount of foul language in movies is disproportionate to the amount of foul language in real life.

Statement of fact:

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease.

Arguable thesis statement/opening paragraph:

Researchers think the incidence of celiac disease is increasing in the USA not only because of an increase in the ability and awareness to diagnose it, but also because of changes in the agricultural system. In particular, they are looking at the increased use of pesticides, insecticides, and genetically modified wheat as culprits. Some of these theories are more likely to be valid than others.

The Chicago Fire of 1871, also called the Great Chficago Fire, burned from October 8 to October 10, 1871, and destroyed thousands of buildings, killed an estimated 300 people and caused an estimated $200 million in damages. Legend has it that a cow kicked over a lantern in a barn and started the fire, but other theories hold that humans or even a meteor might have been responsible for the event that left an area of about four miles long and almost a mile wide of the Windy City, including its business district, in ruins. Following the blaze, reconstruction efforts began quickly and spurred great economic development and population growth.

Chicago Fire: October 1871

In October 1871, dry weather and an abundance of wooden buildings, streets and sidewalks made Chicago vulnerable to fire. The Great Chicago Fire began on the night of October 8, in or around a barn located on the property of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary at 137 DeKoven Street on the city’s southwest side. Legend holds that the blaze started when the family’s cow knocked over a lighted lantern; however, Catherine O’Leary denied this charge, and the true cause of the fire has never been determined. What is known is that the fire quickly grew out of control and moved rapidly north and east toward the city center.

The fire burned wildly throughout the following day, finally coming under control on October 10, when rain gave a needed boost to firefighting efforts. The Great Chicago Fire left an estimated 300 people dead and 100,000 others homeless. More than 17,000 structures were destroyed and damages were estimated at $200 million.

The disaster prompted an outbreak of looting and lawlessness. Companies of soldiers were summoned to Chicago and martial law was declared on October 11, ending three days of chaos. Martial law was lifted several weeks later.

The month after the fire, Joseph Medill (1823-99) was elected mayor after promising to institute stricter building and fire codes, a pledge that may have helped him win the office. His victory might also be attributable to the fact that most of the city’s voting records were destroyed in the fire, so it was next to impossible to keep people from voting more than once.

Despite the fire’s devastation, much of Chicago’s physical infrastructure, including its transportation systems, remained intact. Reconstruction efforts began quickly and spurred great economic development and population growth, as architects laid the foundation for a modern city featuring the world’s first skyscrapers. At the time of the fire, Chicago’s population was approximately 324,000; within nine years, there were some 500,000 Chicagoans. By 1890, the city was a major economic and transportation hub with an estimated population of more than 1 million people. (In America, only New York City had a larger population at the time.) In 1893, Chicago hosted the World’s Columbian Exposition, a tourist attraction visited by some 27.5 million people.

Today, the Chicago Fire Department training academy is located on the site of the O’Leary property where the Great Chicago Fire started. In 1997, the Chicago City Council passed a resolution exonerating Catherine O’Leary, an Irish immigrant who died in 1895, and her cow.

Compare and Contrast The selection "We Were There, Too!" allows readers to compare and contrast the experiences of two young people involved in the American Revolution.  As you read, look for text evidence that helps you think about how the situations, motives, and traits of the two subjects are alike and different.  Use a graphic organizer like this one to record similarities and differences between the two patriots.

When you compare and contrast the actions of two or more historical figures, you learn more about each one's character.  The things they do and the choices they make show who they are inside.

In "We Were There, Too!" Joseph Plumb Martin and Sybil Ludington are similar in that they act on behalf of their country.  Their behaviors are alike in other ways, too, but they also have some important differences.

Recording text evidence in a Venn diagram like the one above will help you keep track of similarities and differences between Joseph Plumb Martin and Sybil Ludington.

When you compare and contrast two people, look for text evidence that shows how the two characters are different about the same topic.  For example, if the text says that Jack likes chocolate ice-cream and that Jill likes strawberry ice-cream, that would be a good piece of text evidence to use in your Venn diagram because it tells us that Jack and Jill like different kinds of ice cream.  In this example, we can compare how they are different about the topic of favorite ice cream.

However, if the text says that Jack like dogs, but does not say anything about what animals Jill likes, you cannot say that Jack likes dogs and Jill doesn't.  Unless the text says that Jill does not like dogs, you cannot assume that just because the text says Jack likes dogs and doesn't say anything about Jill, that Jill must not like dogs.  When you compare and contrast, the things that are different MUST be differences about the same topic.
