Second topic:
When I was a kid, I wasn't able to understand why people loved soccer so much. Adults, and even other kids, would spend almost two hours watching a match. To me, a soccer match was nothing but a bunch of men running after a ball, trying to kick it into a goal. It seemed silly to play it, even sillier to watch it.
As I grew up, however, and began to practice sports myself, I began to understand the thrill of the game. As a volleyball player - volleyball is now my favorite sport -, I felt excited about winning a match. It meant so much! It meant we were more skilled than the other team. It meant the hours and hours of practice had been worth it. It meant we were strong and capable individuals. It meant the world!
One day, someone explained the reason why to me. Sports are a substitute for our primordial competitive instincts. We are animals, just like any other animal there is out there, and we need to prove our worth. If we are smart and in good shape enough to bring food home and procreate - or win a volleyball or soccer match -, we deserve to stay alive. We don't die in the hands of unforgiving nature and our enemies.
Now, I watch sports through different eyes. I see them as a healthy competition, a way to channel our instincts and move our bodies. Volleyball, specially, is thrilling and beautiful to watch. It teaches us sportsmanship, respect, and teamwork.
