During the 1650s, The British government purswaded a good and benefited ( Mercantilism ) international trade. So this is how it worked, British demanded the Americans to provide raw goods to Britain. Later Britain would use the raw goods and turn them into manufactured goods that were then sold all over European markets that came back to the colonies.
