 Plantations were normally built around a large central house, called the plantation house. This is where the slave owners would sleep, therefore they wouldn't want the slave sleeping in the same house as them. A dormitory building would be costly to build and provide luxuries for the slaves, and the owners felt property didn't need luxury. Large tents are what an uneducated person would put, but you are a smart person and likely have read the lesson plan to figure out that is Native Americans, not slaves.
