Mind reading is when a person assumes to know what the other is thinking about without even bothering to ask the person; filtering is when a person seems to listen but is clearly ignoring some points of the discussion; derailing is when a person suddenly changes the topic of discussion; judging is when a person is too quick to evaluate the other person without even trying to understand how the person feels; and placating is when a person agrees to quickly without even thinking about his decisions.
These are all blockages to an effective communication which can lead to conflicts and problems to be left unsolved.
In the very beginning of the story, it shows that Rainsford does not care or care to think about what the animal is experiencing. He states that the animal has no understanding. Then as the hunter became the hunted, he is able to relate to the animals, and how they knows fear.
