Catlin's paintings from this time period are considered to be artistic documentation because this his art is how we know about the Native American way of life. Unfortunately, when colonization happen the Native Americans were mostly wiped out, and so was a lot of their culture and their form of artwork. Catlins painitngs help us get back a little, we get to see the way they lived, hunted, and dressed.
