Una de las maneras en que Lyddie cambia es en su actitud hacia la educación. A lo largo de la historia, llega a entender el valor del aprendizaje formal, mejorando sus habilidades de lectura abordando libros más desafiantes y estableciéndose el objetivo de asistir al Oberlin College. Inicialmente, Lyddie llegó al molino con el único propósito de proveer para su familia. Pero al establecerse el ambicioso objetivo de asistir a la universidad, se le han abierto nuevas vistas de oportunidad.
