The engraving depicts St. Jerome, a saint and Catholic theologian, sitting at a table reading and writing in a studio accompanied by the usual iconography, namely a lion. It is one of three Meisterstiche (main engravings) together with The Knight, Death and the Devil (1513) and Melancholy I (1514) created at a time when Dürer almost ceased to work in painting or woodcutting to concentrate on calcogravures.
