Columbus is credited with leading the first European expedition south of Canada and on his first voyage, landed in Bahamas as he attempted to reach Asia.
He thought he had reached Asia such that when he landed in what would become the Dominican Republic, he thought he had reached the British West Indies. The Dominican Republic shares their island with Haiti which is a French speaking country.
