Washington, he addresses the need that African Americans need to have the same economic opportunities, as white people, before political rights can be achieved. This passage is addressed towards African Americans to continue to fight for their rights. He says: "cast down your bucket where you are" this small statement is small but powerful in that it tells African Americans to stop their work of hard labor and fight for the right to have equal economic opportunities. He appeals to ethos by both appealing to African Americans in that they need to fight for their rights and also to white people in that hiring African Americans would help the economy a great deal.
