The Declaration of Independence was heavily influenced by liberalism and Enlightenment thought (The founding fathers actually drew a lot of inspiration from Enlightenment philosophers such as John Locke and Rousseau). These characteristics included in these ideologies include freedom of speech/press, universal suffrage, equality under the law, liberty, etc.
