While Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby lives in West Egg which is an inferior part of the island, East Egg represents the rich families who had inherited wealth from generations, unlike the 'new found' riches of those in the West Egg. The green light in "The Great Gatsby" was first mentioned in chapter 1 when Nick and Gatsby met after he had returned from his dinner with his cousin Daisy and her husband living in East Egg. It is representative of Gatsby's desire to regain what was once his- money, power, class and being in the company of the rich society again, and most important of all, Daisy.
