The material from which the Mosque of Jenne is made are sun-dried mud bricks and mortar, coated with plaster. The main feature of the building is the rows of columns that give it the impressive look and brings in the principle of repetition.

<u>The Great Mosque of Jenne is made out of Adobe bricks (sun-baked mud bricks), sand, and earth mortar, coated with plaster</u>. It is an amazing achievement that such a great building was made out of these materials.

The mosque does not have the usual design of Islamic architecture. While the original mosque was a massive compact building, the present one is clearly influenced by the French colonial administration that was in charge of it. It has an almost baroque design with rows of columns that resemble towers. <u>The repetition and rhythm of these elements are one of the bases of its design. </u><u>The Rodier palm sticks are placed as the decoration</u>, but also help as support when repairs are made.
