The United States government was afraid that the Soviet Union would generate a revolution in the western European countries and which would eventually reach United States soil and therefore they had to fight it.

Yes post was conflicts between the U.S. and Soviet Union were inevitable. The reasons being that it was the era of the nuclear arms race. Each country was trying to develop nuclear bombs first and the cold war was happening in other countries such as east Germany and Cuba. During this time the U.S. and USSR had rising tensions, to the point that each country's leader had their fingers on the big red button ready to launch a nuclear missile within a minute's notice at the other hostile country.
