Las integrinas son glucoproteínas implicadas en el anclaje de las células epiteliales a la matriz extracelular. Las células epiteliales tienen en su base proteínas integrinas que se unen a otras proteínas tales como vitronectina, fibronectina, colágeno y laminina. De este modo, las integrinas se asocian con lamininas de la lámina basal. Las lamininas son otra clase de glucoproteínas las cuales conforman la lámina basal y contienen sitios de unión para integrinas. A partir de esta asociación las células epiteliales pueden adherirse a la membrana basal y mantener su orientación dentro de un tejido. Estas uniones son fundamentales para que las células epiteliales puedan soportar fuerzas y son críticas durante el desarrollo apropiado (ontogenia) del organismo.
