I think that the poem is saying that love and friendship.... how do I say this....(oh boy)... friendship and love sometimes intertwine. for example you may go see your love over your friends, vise versa. I think that it is saying though mostly that love sometimes gets in the way of friendship. However in the end friendship is better because if you lose your lover, you still have your friends.
