Answer:

The quote that is an example of direct characterization is:

A. "The demon was a big, cheerful-looking demon with a bland, round face. He eyed father."

Explanation:

We have direct characterization when we are told by the narrator what the character is or looks like. It is an explicit characterization. For instance, if in the story there are sentences such as "he was nervous" or "she had big brown eyes", the author is using direct characterization.

That is what we have in letter A. The quote uses direct characterization to let readers know what the demon looked like. We are clearly told he was "big" and "cheerful-looking", and he had a "bland, round face".

Answer:

The play tells the reader that Anne is very intrested in everything and was upstairs when Mr. Frank came in with the others.

How do I know:

 • I know this because in the play it says Anne comes running up the stairs. She is thirteen, quick in her movements, interested in everything, mercurial in her emotions. She wears a cape, long wool socks and carries a schoolbag

 • From reading the play, I can infer that Anne has been taught good manners. From reading the play, I can infer that Anne has a mystery she really wants to solve up in the attic.

How do I know:

I know this because in the play it says Anne gives a polite little curtsy as she shakes Mr. Van Daan’s hand. Then she immediately starts off on a 180 tour of investigation of her new home, going upstairs.

Whew!! Hope this helps!
