Following the formation of a Delian League involving about 330 members forming an association of Greek City-States in 478 BC, whose main objective is to continue to fight the Persian Empire.
However, instead of using the money judiciously, Athens alienated other city-states by taking money for the common defense and spending it on themselves. This eventually led to the Peloponnesian War in 431 BC and ultimately the league was dissolved in 404 BC, following the end of the Peloponnesian War.
