The easiest way to understand this is to replace the word "develop" with the optional synonyms.
For example, the sentence "Research shows that children who <u>realize</u> a reading habit at a younger age do better in school." doesn't make as much sense as the sentence "Research shows that children who <u>establish</u> a reading habit at a younger age do better in school."
