When a person breathes slowly, he must become aware of a process that is usually done without much thought, and this awareness allows the brain to focus on something beside tension. Also, the slow movement of the breathing muscles is taken up by the brain, with the consequent sensation of relaxation. Finally, organically, breathing allows the lungs to take away toxic waste produced by the accelerated response of a body in tension, which favor the muscles and allows them to distend.

That is in fact True. If you take slow deep breaths before anything stressful then you are very likely to be more relaxed.
