Alexandra is proud of the Finch family's social status in Maycomb, and immediately begins to socialize in Maycomb. Scout thinks good people are defined by doing the best they can with what they have, but Alexandra seems to believe that the older a family's history, the better the family is. Alexandra even forces Atticus to teach Scout and Jem about their family history. But this strange change in Atticus makes Scout cry, and with relief he gives up.

Tom's trial was particularly difficult for Atticus to win, as the racial codes of the 1940s made it very likely, from the beginning, for Tom to be blamed, even when there is a lack of evidence. These are some of the reasons why this is the case:
- The social context of the South is one of prevailing racism. Although not all residents are racist, most people do internally believe that white people are generally better than black people. This means Tom's trial is difficult from the start.
- There are sexual undertones in the book, as Tom is accused of ra.pe. This reflects the idea of African-American men as being overly sexual and interested in white women. This is reinforced by the fact that Mayella is not seen as a woman who might have desires of her own.
- Finally, the fact that African-Americans in general were not wealthy means that Tom is not only black, but he is also a farm labourer, without much wealth and status. This places him in an even more vulnerable position.
This stoker's novel shows how fragile human existence was, and weakened the beliefs of free will and immortal soul. Stoker relied on medical sciences as a physiology and used much of the novel in his characters, brain actions that cast doubt on such beliefs as trance and somnambulism, dramatizing a very common fear at the time of the novel, the Victorian era. It was well portrayed the fear that at that time humans were soulless animals and followed only their physiological and cerebral instincts. The soul and the mind were in conflict. It was the religious faith of the time against the effects considered "paranormal", portrayed in the novel.
