What is Ernest Hemingway use characterization to define the narrator in "In Another Country?"
olga2289 [7]

The author uses physical descriptions, private and shared thoughts, the behavior of the character, and also uses the conversations to define the character. This characterization is reflected in the text when the narrator says <em>"But I stayed good friends with the boy who had been wounded his first day at the front, because he would never know now how he would have turned out; so he could never be accepted either, and I liked him because I thought perhaps he would not have turned out to be a hawk either."</em>

In "In Another Country? "The narrator is part of the characters that participate in the story, in the previous excerpt we see that the author uses characterization of the narrator through his memories, the feelings he had with others and his hopes. Further in the story will be given more details that helps us finish characterizing the narrator as an American soldier (p.2, l.35) who is not married (p.3, l.21-22) and who enjoys playing soccer with his friends.

Answer:In chapter 5, when Scrooge wakes up, he is a changed person. One change is involuntary. He is happy and excited. He dances around the house preparing for the day. At one point, the excitement gets to him, and he laughs uncharacteristically:

Really, for a man who had been out of practice for so many years, it was a splendid laugh, a most illustrious laugh. The father of a long, long line of brilliant laughs!

Dickens uses the laugh to show how overwhelmed Scrooge is by happiness and excitement.

The next example shows a voluntary change in Scrooge. The day after Christmas, Scrooge decides to pretend he is his old self again. He wants to play a joke on his clerk, Bob Cratchit, who doesn’t realize that Scrooge has changed. After giving Cratchit a scare, he reveals the new Scrooge in a dramatic fashion:

“Now, I’ll tell you what, my friend,” said Scrooge, “I am not going to stand this sort of thing any longer. And therefore,” he continued, leaping from his stool, and giving Bob such a dig in the waistcoat that he staggered back into the Tank again; “and therefore I am about to raise your salary!”
