There are three basic types of plate boundaries, convergent, divergent, and transform, all of which can occur on land or in the ocean waters.

The transform plate boundaries are plate boundaries that are found where tectonic plates are sliding past each other. By doing so, the area near the boundary is constantly under immense pressure, which causes stress and breaking of the crust. Because of the crust's cracking, there are a lot of adjustments happening in it, meaning that a lot of earthquakes occur. The earthquakes are often not very strong, but every now and then there is an earthquake that has a catastrophic effect.
