In a direct democracy every single citizen of the democratic state votes on every single thing that needs to be decided and for something to be passed it must obtain a majority vote from the voting populace. However an indirect democracy which is what the US, Britain and Canada operate under is where the populace of the democracy vote for representatives by popular vote who then will vote on things such as federal laws/taxes or the constitutionality of a bill/law. Although a good thing to keep in mind that in both democracies anything can be challenged or pushed through by the populace if they believe it to be needed.
