In the South, laws called the black codes
Tems11 [23]

The Black Codes, sometimes known as the Black Laws, were rules controlling how African Americans should behave (free and freed blacks).

What was Black Codes ?

According to a statement made by James Kent in 1832, "in most of the United States, there is a distinction in respect to political privileges between free colored persons of African blood and free colored persons of white blood; and in fact, in no part of the country do the latter, in point of fact, participate equally with the whites, in the exercise of civil and political rights."

Even though Black Codes predated the Civil War and were present in several Northern states, they were only codified into ordinary law in Southern U.S. states.
